Test....test....

    Camera inactive two week visit Wisconsin friends, few more assist mom's med issues, return Eugene ten days ago: have Swett Lodge news/photos.
     Evening PDX to Chicago flight, Craigslist student car share Eugene/downtown Portland, PDX light rail.  O'Hare/Chicago train, Megabus - $10 Chicago/Minneapolis RT - Minneapolis good friend met, Philly cheese steak dine atop retro filling station through Minnesota monsoon.  Enjoy friends, Wisconsin country.  Chore help 'round couple places, maintain safe level self medication.  Move some dirt; tractor mow trails, yard - tractor hit same poor birch daughter Tia little Toyota hit score ago learning driving; install window air con including circuit.  Dismayed learn fracking sand - with water, pressures oil out of wells - constitutes beautiful glacial run off Western Wisconsin rills.  800 surface mines leveling sand hills planned next few years - to date only two in place - will lower water table: best, flatten/uglify whole area; worst, desertify.  Very unfortunate.
     Reluctant Chicago return; accompany mom, dad family reunion/mom's birthday party Galena, IL.  Cook meals, doctor visit drive; update mom's house: clean garage; repair remaining bike, photo consider selling; ditto lawn mower - decide keep both;
clean basement; update yard work.  Mom's condition prompts extended stay, recruit eight string friend keep me through.  Fortunate five siblings share mom's care load through treatment: fingers cross for good outcome, signs hopeful.
     Pass baton to sister Kate who spends a week with mom: Chicago Midway/PDX flight, PDX/Eugene Amtrak, jungle garden, Swett Lodge return.  Midwest hot humid summer weather, quickly rolling into cool fall reminds: Eugene's climate grow/dry crops, sweet.  Numerous neighbors greet; inquire about trip, ma's health within hours of return: feels like, good to be home.
Find all in good order: harvest, thin time.
Mow lawn after dust suppressing rain, chop various opportunistic weeds/saplings.
August departure prior plant turnip, radish, rutabaga, beet midst one another: pull radishes (check out monster upper right) allow beets underneath mature;
thin turnips; cut Russian kale, collards way back, bundle/hang best leaves - soup/stew crumbles?
Bring in all Hubbard squash/few turbans one day (scissors upper center/ toes lower left: scale), garage store;
realize remaining done too, bring in another day.  30 one to twenty pound squash - good haul!
     Local wag avers sensed my return 'cause fall rains begin.  Nice weather in between yet: beautiful fall day enjoy mall hike, movie, Sizzler dinner.  Pull corn, shuck ears, kitchen table dry (few beans dry foreground), shell,
put aside 'bout three gallons shelled stew/soup corn.  Save little money, may not use much: connect handling/shelling beautiful golden kernels as ancestors have for millennia.  Many believe we quickly approach Mayan long count calendar node.  Begs question: in times when we can't achieve cohesive plans one Congress session to next, let alone one generation to next, the profundity of what occurred 26000 years ago to cause a whole civilization generation after generation after generation to devote immense focused effort recording, boggles today's freewheeling individualistic mind set.  Thought/dry kernel digest slowly.
Uncharacteristically spring for good as new six quart Emeril cast dutch oven (pd 35 USD, new 50 USD): wood stove top stew here we come!
Feel squirrel like: stash food, winter prepare.  Email about Cslist gas range; ascertain natural/LP fuel convertible; finally get call Saturday; Toyo wagon retrieve: 60 USD; partial disassemble, clean, reassemble - nice!  To do list: get LP tanks, hook up range.
Final bare bulb pull string fixture above kitchen sink solution.
Garden going into winter mode;
still tomatoes, green beans, kale, couple melons,
turnips/rutabaga out there.  Soon free city delivered leaves layer, lime: cycle on.

     Swett Lodge beam/raise brink, submit clearly non comprehensive 'back in the saddle' entry.  Trust finds you and yours well.  Blessed here for many reasons, entreat keep Char Walter's good health in mind.  Licorice root fern first transplanted from back porch eave to garage back corner, next to back step adjacent under porch roof thrives, neighbor Doc nurtured in my absence: life goes on!

Peace

Crawl under Swett Lodge, drill hole through subfloor, 2x4 bottom wall stringer into stud space by kitchen window, shove up good length yellow 2 12w/ground Romex wire.  Outside back porch remove siding piece above new blue plastic junction box location, Gertie's tailgate truss rod ('bout 3.5 feet, hooked one end) fish Romex,

Accept stand by dental appointment Thursday morn: inspectors come, go.  No word by one or so, call: code compliant work closes/fulfills permit.  Yippee - no city regulator breath down neck worry!  Continue code compliant work; less inspection, less hassle.
Inspection complete, reconnect sub code garage wire (as found hanging mid air 'tween house/garage, eventually per code will run through underground house/garage utilities connector pipe) at new blue junction box next kitchen window, leave box cover hang one side, Big Gulp plastic cup moisture protect: good to go.  Held off water heater wire; finally remove heater, jack house reduce weight; realize can work around PVC conduit wire pathway now it's in place - glad it's summer.  Gotta find shorty forty heater.

      Squash grow well (lip gloss tube scale);
last beets dry front year's take dried jarred rutabaga/turnip.  Beets stain: separate.  Perhaps not surprisingly dry 'pig food' baggie chips complement cheap beer: won't last long.
First crop harvest/store, couple mornings turn soil, create new row mounds: second crop ready.  Note corn tassle; row Russian kale left; melon, couple kohlrabi center.
     Lumber yard overload; use materials, kitchen continue Swett Lodge raise support walls.

Loft wall header 4x4: wall lean stud, rest one end 4x4 atop; second stud raise 4x4; kick jam stud underneath.
Vertical level stud, position header, 2 ton jack header, install remainder studs.
Plenty error room, feel it coming: lose control header/stud, crashes lower pane west front room window.  Spoke wag: 'fix window, now break 'em'.  No complaint: manageable if job's largest cost.
Lean 'lumberyard' reorganize: wet ahead.  Nice stack 4x4 shoring; torn apart gargantuan 16'x15" freebie beam contributes appreciable dimensional perimeter joist, replacement joist, joist end sandwich stack: right Swett Lodge ready.
     Compulsive, answer free door, shower Craigslist ad: need not interior doors; storm door not 'sposed to fit Swett Lodge, does; already have doorless corner shower stall.  Keep new (here upside down - for garage? not sure: currently thinking traditional Swett Lodge tub/shower) doored stall, storm door; St. Vinnie's pickup haul unwanted interior doors, corner shower, couple other items.  Scavenger's life.
     Coming week: month absence prep.  Register Gertie, mega laundry load, two dentist visits complete multiple surface fill receding gums exposed dentin, plant second crop, repair broken window (!), batten Swett Lodge hatches, pack.  Travels return, raise Swett Lodge ready, expect accomplish little house wise trip prior, sign off here until mid September.  Hope spend old Wisconsin friends, mom quality time; attend mom's 90th fete; attempt high point pictorial travel log: don't expect much - historically poor track record.  'Til then be well, god bless, peace.

Alchemy

     Often think substance transmutation Swett Lodge spawns/requires: alchemy.  Gather folks cast offs, sift, repurpose, refine: works.  Scrappin' neighbor cleans up estate, carries away beaucoup metal; first trip his trusty Toyota pickup ride along, check out sixty year resident/home builders stash: gotta BIG truck return.  Estate manager on her way out coming back with Chevy, start loading; she sends upstairs house, collect lumber there (too!), discover Kirby attachment hose: this clean out meant to be.  Number hours later she returns to lock up, just finish humongo truck load: didn't expect, didn't get multiple load time.  Slowly begin couple mile homeward.  Course 'snot a party 'til the cops come: stopped, overloaded prairie schooner longest board six feet beyond photo's red flag (far right) location.  Think copper stopper returning from official biz or ??: unmarked SUV, patrol car following - couldn't ignore heavily loaded, excessively long, slow moving vehicle impeding traffic.  Check license, reg, scold, admonish 'shorten, further secure' (DONE shortly thereafter!) sent on my way: John law close call - whew!
     Abundant root crop harvest ready travel prior; St. Vinnie's procure potato peeler; peel, wash, shred few small yellow flesh turnip, crimson ruby beet, snow white - not yellow, news to me - rutabaga; opened brown paper bag covered kitchen 'table' spread: Oregon arid summer weather perfect root crop dry test.
     Truck loadin' played, crawling 'round decades undisturbed estate garage attic extra grungy, couple weeks hence Thursday am surface filling teeth enamel above receded gum (many), Wednesday shower day shift.  Receive electric permit expiration notice, possible work incomplete penalties, mull action course.  Truck groans couple more days.
     Afternoon sort: firewood by truck, plywood various thickness piles under tree, lumber yard bound toward Swett Lodge, big thin plywood sheets garage lean: quite a load all spread out, some already stashed.  Neighbor does, doesn't, does want particle board house lean sheet as bed support - whence it came: great -
clean out garage accommodate new plywood arrivals.  Dry, size sorted, leaned: not much point having around if ya can't get to it when ya want it.  Note load topper unopened red/blue roll six inch batt fiberglass insulation (left) peaking from storage behind soon to be mounted freebie back storm door: keep it comin'!
Load's big 'lumberyard' donation after plywood: stack beautiful 1x boards including couple sixteen foot 1x12s.  Lumber yard chock full: work ready.
Circle saw dice firewood - boards, boxes, pallets, planters, broom handles; brush, furniture, wood odds 'n ends neighbor donated; cat piss luan plywood roof annex firewood shanty.
Pretty country from this side: ex storm door support.  Got wood!
     Dry test resoundingly successful: production.  Harvest couple baggies, turnips (right, keys for scale);
cut away bad stuff - thoroughly for eating, more so storing;
peeler shave; set 'em dry.  Two day process - day one up to/including dark red beets, day two corn rowed beyond - may munch raw, stew/soup add.  Sure neighbors see Dan/whack job - reciprocated - garden grazing all hours, drying stinky old roots: we'll see who's eating phat, laying for the wait, lonely winter!  Remember: turnip, rutabaga, beet have millennia longer western gastrointestinal relationship than 500 years potato western diet introduced after '92 (fourteen), Columbus sailed ocean blue - spud's a new world crop.  Compatibility?
     Gardening feels alchemical: all manner fruit/vegetable scrap, wood ash, leaves, lime, excrement; sweet, nutritious food become.  First crop near in, soon begin fall planting: roots more!
     Arrive at connect house wiring code compliant - though work will have to be redone as it passes through rotten perimeter joist - path of least resistance.  Get out waiting 2 1/2" Forstner bit;

bike to Kate's; assist major electric lawn mower idiot switch reassemble; borrow half inch drill; careful measure; remove couple near hole area siding nails; drill small pilot/test hole; Forstner bit grind through exterior siding, perimeter joist under new Swett Lodge 200 amp electric service year ago some dude (moi) installed; hand saw, glue PVC: complete electric wire pathway into crawl space including removable cover elbow.  Shy wire, arrange Monday afternoon delivery contractor's stock liquidation 250' roll 2/12 romex wire - good to go for a while - jury rigged yellow wire run through window, kitchen, window; ready wire through PVC
into crawl space, through joists, into wall space by kitchen window replace.  Vintage setup: two fabric covered 14 gauge - by today's standards very light especially whole house power - second fabric sleeve protected, badly drilled siding holes emerge (upper right above yellow patch), meter/house supply connected.
Pry window trim up; gingerly remove small hole butchered siding piece in splinters; keyhole saw, chisel 2x4 inch box hole siding just below; salvage remnant replace splintered siding.
Think leave siding piece loose, inspector can see intact cloth double sheathed, discreet ceramic post house supply wires go into - once completed -
non abrading blue plastic junction box red wire nutted together; garage wire disconnected/garage retracted 'til further notice; weather proof cover sealed, now wire's available.  None too soon: inspection Thursday - under house, drill hole into stud space, fish wire from blue box, drill/wire through joists into circuit box - fulfill code.  Raw material transmogrified.
     More alchemy: previously known as hot house; no enclosed back porch, through house breeze, ventilated/insulated attic ameliorated; Swett Lodge mighty pleasant sere outside.  Wonderful cool night breeze; garden produces, garners raves like mad; people donate building materials/heat wood: OR growin' on me like fungus.  Soon duck like: crave moisture!

     Next couple weeks travel prepare: notable items here.
Peace.
